| “Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy,” ps 33:18 nkjv

September 13, 2022 What does it mean that, “the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him?” Does it mean that He does not see the rest of the people? I think it means that it is the “Covenant Eye” of Yahweh… the same as His condition that says, “if you do this, then I will do this…” It would seem that those, “who hope in His mercy,” must know something about His nature and His promises [in Yeshua]… otherwise how could they “fear Him,” and “hope in His mercy?” In the next verse the Psalmist writes: “To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine.” Ps 33:19 nkjv Now we come to the rationale of the one who fears Yahweh and hopes in His mercy: “Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. 21 For our heart shall rejoice in Him, Because we have trusted in His holy name. 22 Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, Just as we hope in You.” ps 33:21-22 nkjv The “Because” factor [above] is very important in our walk of faith. Where does it come from? As a small child, during my Sunday School days, probably starting about the first or second grade level in my childhood, I was taught the wonders of the LORD… the impression of those “words of the Bible,” which the Bible tells us are “Spirit, they are Life,” jn 6:63 nkjv, are even more powerfully instilled in my mind and heart today. It is because of the “because” factor... we have trusted in His holy name… there are only two choices, the other one does not end well. The Bible says: “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.” ps 33:6 nkjv If we think about that verse… it truly is a “wonder” that such a concept could be reality, which it is. And it is precisely “because” of this unexplainable and unlimited power and fathomless love and mercy that Yahweh provides, that there is understanding to both fear Him and hope in Him… these truths provide the substance for fueling the emotions of fear and hope of the “because” factor… provided to those who have faith in Him and the Word He has made available for our every need. If you read Psalms chapter 33, you will see all of these issues expressed in the Psalmist words… in a panorama of Yahweh's greatness and glory… His mighty works. In these challenging times, now more than ever in my lifetime (80 years this November) , and probably in yours, what could be more comforting than verse 33:19: “To deliver their [our] soul from death, And to keep them [us] alive in famine.” Shalom… John |
